Air cargo charter can require small, fast jet aircraft at short notice to carry urgent packages or aircraft spares weighing a few kilos, or a giant Antonov 124 aircraft to carry 100 tonnes plus of freight across the world. For smaller items most air taxi and executive jet aircraft can be used for air cargo charter, but larger loads need specialised cargo aircraft types such as this Ilyushin 76, which can carry up to 45 tonnes over intercontinental distances. Cargo aircraft are used frequently for disaster relief flights, to carry hazardous or dangerous material plus large and particularly heavy items, such as oil equipment and excavators. These large loads are regularly carried on Antonov 124 aircraft, which have a particularly long and wide freight hold, and can be loaded through the hinged nose.
